Psalms 34:5 They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces will never be ashamed.
Radiant , sparkling like the sheen of a running stream with sunlight [for us, Son light] shining on it, and so, flowing [rushing flood-stage rivers of living water]!
Cities on a hill. Can’t be mistaken at night, and they are on a hill upon which the Lord has given us hind’s (deer’s) feet, so we are able to walk surefooted!
Lights that give light to everything in the room!
The light of the world!
Radiant with His glory! The bride-to-be, the church, all glorious within, with His glory, His kabod, His presence, His majesty, His light!
Faces never ashamed, never mourning as Haman did in Esther 6:12 when he was forced to give honor to Mordecai the Jew. Afterward, Haman covered his face because he had to give his enemy honor.
Not us! Our heads are not covered, we are brilliantly shining with His glory!
Who were those that looked on Him and were radiant,
their faces never ashamed?
The answer is in the rest of Psalm 34:
Psalms 34:1 I will bless the LORD at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul will make its boast in the LORD;
The humble will hear it and rejoice.
3 O magnify the LORD with me,
And let us exalt His name together.
I boast in the Lord,
I tell you what HE has done,
I praise Him!
When the humble [6035, meek, poor in spirit, needy]
hear my praise to the Lord,
they will rejoice, too,
for they, too, have seen their need for Jesus Christ.
They, too, have become meek before God,
they, too, have humbled themselves,
and they, too, have been delivered by Him!
Psalms 34:4 I sought the LORD, and He answered me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
Like David and others who knew their need,
I sought (1875) the Lord,
I treaded and frequented the place where He was,
I pursued and searched for Him,
I asked Him and I worshiped Him.
And He delivered me from all my fears.
I was a captive of sin and disease,
and of Satan,
but when I sought the Lord,
He delivered me, He set me free!
And I have no fear of judgment; perfect love casts out fear (1John 4:18).
5 They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces will never be ashamed.
And so my face is radiant, as are the faces of the humble who hear my praise to God and rejoice.
We looked to Him (not just at Him)
we gazed at Him, we looked attentively to Him,
we depended on Him, we beheld Him
And He made us radiant ,
He made us sparkle like the sheen of a running stream,
and so, He made us to flow.
Rivers, rushing flood torrents of living water,
flowing from our bellies!
Psalms 34:6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him
And saved him out of all his troubles.
Those who are poor men, who are humbled,
who see their need,
cry to Him in their distress.
And He heard me,
He listened closely,
and He saved me out of all my troubles ,
my dire straits, my anguish.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him,
And rescues them.
We are under the wings of the Lord,
we are garrisoned by God,
kept by Him (1Peter 1:5)!
Why? Because we fear Him,
we revere Him,
we are awestruck by Him,
we worship Him.
He rescues us when we are in trouble
because we are humble before Him and cry out to Him.
We know we cannot save ourselves.
We look to Him!
With all this in mind, O world, and professing church:
Psalms 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good;
How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
treading and frequenting,
asking, worshiping Him.
Taste (2938) perceive Him,
look on Him,
be aware of Him,
partake of Him!
When you do, you will see ,
you will behold, experience,
that the Lord is good ,
favorable, pleasing, sweet.
Take refuge in Him, and you will be blessed.
Many of you who profess to be His
have not yet tasted Him,
because you have not yet humbled yourself.
The tasting, the perceiving,
the looking to, the awareness of Him,
the partaking of Him,
comes to those who bow their knee to Him.
Now, the exhortation:
9 O fear the LORD, you His saints;
For to those who fear Him there is no want.
10 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger;
But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.
11 Come, you children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 Who is the man who desires life
And loves length of days that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil
And your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Depart from evil and do good;
Seek peace and pursue it.
Those who fear the Lord do Verse 13 and 14. We have no want; He supplies our need.
Those who seek the Lord, who tread, frequent, pursue, search, ask, worship Him, shall never be in want of any good thing — we have Him, and He is the “good thing!”
If you fear Him,
if you worship and revere and are awestruck by Him and love Him,
you are in right standing before Him,
and His righteousness literally dwells within you,
and manifests through you.
And there is nothing you lack.
Psalms 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous
And His ears are open to their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers,
To cut off the memory of them from the earth.
The evildoers and the righteous will stand before the throne of judgment. Jesus will be seated there. He will see that the evildoers’ hands are empty, and will say to them, “Away from me, you who practice lawlessness! I never knew you!”
His eyes are toward the righteous,
His ears hear their cry.
2Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His . . .”
He wants your heart — all of it. He asks you for it today!
Your heart is divided, a fountain out of which both sweet and bitter water comes; its source is not God.
Seek to be the river which makes glad the city of God!
But His face is against (6213) evildoers.
He is hard at work, industrious,
to wipe even their memory from the earth.
Psalms 34:17 The righteous cry, and the LORD hears
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
The Lord will not despise a contrite heart,
one that is crushed, crouching,
one that is humble before Him (Psalm 51:17).
Psalms 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
But the LORD delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones,
Not one of them is broken.
As for the wicked:
21 Evil shall slay the wicked,
And those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
But as for those who are humble
and take refuge in Him,
humbling themselves before Him?
22 The LORD redeems the soul of His servants,
And none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
Become His servant this day,
humble yourself before Him!
Take refuge in Christ!
The Father will place you under His wings, as in Psalm 91!
Join us who bow down to Him because He is our Lord,
and you, too, will become radiant, shining,
sparkling like a flowing river
lit by the light of the Son!
Isaiah 60:1 “ Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
2 “For behold, darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the LORD will rise upon you
And His glory will appear upon you.
3 “ Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.
Isaiah 60:5 “Then you will see and be radiant,
And your heart will thrill and rejoice . . .
Amen, Lord! So be it! Truth!
