[SW104] 08/24/2013 message notes by Rev. Susan J. Wynn ©2013
I wanted to speak another word today, but the Lord insisted that this is the exact time that His word on deception must go forth. I cannot help but obey,
for His timing is always perfect. It is a difficult word for you to hear, O church, but I must speak it.
Isaiah 28:14 Therefore, hear the word of the LORD, O scoffers,
Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,
And with Sheol we have made a pact.
The overwhelming scourge will not reach us when it passes by,
For we have made falsehood our refuge and we have concealed ourselves with deception.”
The Lord speaks to leaders of the church who have made a deal with the world, who think that when the Lord comes to judge, they will not be judged, because they are hidden under a robe of deception.
The Lord’s response to those who wrap themselves in deception like a robe, who snuggle up into it because deceptive words are comforting to them, is in Verse 17:
17 “I will make justice the measuring line
And righteousness the level;
Then hail will sweep away the refuge of lies
And the waters will overflow the secret place.
He will come, O leaders of the church, and measure you against His justice and see if you are in balance with His righteousness or whether you are slanted. He will bring hail to sweep away your lies, and will wash away those secret places where you sin, so your sin is revealed.
From Jeremiah 23, the Lord commands me to comment:
Woe to you shepherds, you leaders and pastors, who are destroying and scattering the sheep of My pasture, declares the Lord. You will say that you have a large church, perhaps 20,000, and they all draw near to hear your words. But your words scatter the flock AWAY from Him and drive them AWAY from Him, because you do not reprove the flock for sin and call them to repentance.
Because you do not attend to the flock of His pasture, He will attend to you, for the Lord sees your deeds as evil! When you do not warn about sin and righteousness and judgment, you do evil in the sight of the Lord.
My response to this warning of the Lord is as Jeremiah’s was:
My heart is broken, my bones tremble, I swoon like a drunken man! I see the deadness of the church that sins, I see her distance from God, and those who lead her are on an evil course, and their might is not right. It is not God’s.
The land is full of adulterers, those who love the world and sin as the world sins and yet say they love God. You have two lovers, church, for even in the Lord’s house, He has found your wickedness.
And He will bring calamity upon all of the adulterers, and all those prophets who prophesy by Baal, who preach man-pleasing messages that appeal to the flesh — God wants us to be rich, wants us to be successful by the world’s standards — these are contrary to Jesus Christ’s words. He commands us not to seek this world’s treasures but the treasures of heaven! You are being led astray, O church, by these false prophets.
And it is throughout the church — not just in northern Israel (Samaria) but in Jerusalem, and so, not only in some geographical locations, but everywhere! What horrible thing does the Lord see them doing?
They strengthen the hands of evildoers. Sinners feel comfortable in their sin, and pastors and leaders, by not calling them to repentance, make them feel strong, like they are protected, like they are fine with God, covered with the blood of the Lamb.
But Hebrews 10:26 and 29 clearly tells us that to go on sinning willfully after the knowledge of the truth is to trample under foot the Son of God and to regard as unclean His blood, and have insulted the Spirit of grace! Punishment awaits those who do so!
The Lord says to churchgoers, Do not listen to the words of these false shepherds, for they are driving you away from Me, scattering you from Me! They are speaking visions of their own imaginations (literally, “hearts”), saying to sinners, those who walk in the stubbornness of their own hearts, “You will have peace,” and “Calamity will not come upon you.”
If they had stood in the council of the Lord, and seen and heard His word, if they were filled with His Spirit so they could see what the Father does and do likewise, and hear what the Father says and say it, they would never comfort evildoers!
He did not send these, but they ran. He did not speak to them, but they made it seem like they were speaking the very words of God!
But if they had stood in His council, here is what they would say: Turn back from your evil way and the evil of your deeds!
Lamentations 2:14 Your prophets have seen for you
False and foolish visions;
And they have not exposed your iniquity
So as to restore you from captivity,
But they have seen for you false and misleading oracles.
And you will say, “That is Old Testament. Things are different since Jesus came.”
That is the deception. Listen:
2Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
That day is here and now — mankind’s sin nature in us has not changed. We want to wrap ourselves in robes of deception, in comforting words that are false and scatter us away from the Lord and drive us away from Him! He has the cure — Jesus will deliver you from slavery to sin (John 8:31-36). He has come to do SO MUCH MORE than forgive your past sins!
So what am I to do, as one charged to speak the truth, to say what the Lord has said, to do what He does?
2Timothy 4:1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
2Timothy 4:5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
And so I speak, I cry out, I weep, I pray, I reprove, rebuke, exhort with great patience and instruction — today and every day!
The Lord corrects those whom He loves. He is correcting you today, leaders and pastors and church. If you are not hearing His words today, you are not His (Hebrews 12:8)!
His grace is here for you today! Repent, turn from your wicked ways, ask Him to forgive you and purify your heart so you cannot help but speak the words He gives you!
The wages of sin is death. There is no way around it. But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (see Romans 6:23). Come to Him, let Him cleanse you, let Him refine you like gold, let Him purify your heart!
