“Why Jesus Came”
Why did Jesus come? Was there any other way for God to reach us?
Scriptures: Genesis 3:18, Isaiah 53
Jesus Christ sweeps the earth,
looking for the treasure of repentant hearts (Luke 15:8-10),
hearts that turn from sin and to Jesus Christ.
Sin is the reason we need a Savior AND
a Lord who will remove our rebellious hearts from us!
For we all like sheep have gone astray,
every one to his own way (Isaiah 53:6).
This was not a surprise to God the Father.
Even from before the earth was formed,
He had already prepared a lamb as a sin offering for us all!!!
(Revelation 13:8, 1 Peter 1:20).
Was there any other way for God to reach us?
If so, why the Lamb?
In Genesis 22, Abraham acted out the great sin offering
that God the Father would make, 2000 years later:
Genesis 22:14 Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided [literally, “it shall be seen”].”
Indeed, it was God who would provide the Lamb for the world,
His one and only Son, on that same mountain,
Mount Moriah (“seen of Yah”).
Is there any other way for God to reach us?
If there is, why His Son?
And His provision is seen by the entire world!
He gives us free will to either receive what He has done,
or reject it!
It began in the Garden of Eden,
after Adam and Eve sinned
by disobeying the single command of the LORD.
But afterwards, He said to Satan the tempter:
Genesis 3:15 (NLT) And I will cause hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
A mortal wound to the head of Satan,
to the authority of Satan over human beings,
delivered by the One and Only Son!
The Son’s heel was bruised on the cross,
but He arose!
So God sent His Lamb, a part of Himself, His One and Only Son.
He is the only Way God could reach us!
With all that established, behold, look at the kindness of God in Isaiah 53,
written 700 years before Jesus Christ’s ministry here on earth!
Isaiah 53:2b He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
3 He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Many reject Him today.
The world (and some of the church) says He’s nothing special,
just perhaps a good man,
maybe a prophet,
or a great philosopher,
who lived and died a long time ago.
Isaiah 53:4 Surely our griefs [literally, sicknesses) He Himself bore,
And our sorrows [literally, pains] He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted. (See Matthew 8:17!)
They do not understand that He did what He did
for the sake of all human beings.
They think He was cursed by God
because God didn’t come to His rescue
and save Him from death on the cross.
Strange it is! We think He was cursed by God.
But He took upon Himself the blows that humans should have received.
He was torn to shreds when He was scourged by the Romans.
He was crucified!
We deserved it, but He took it for us.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
Was there any other way for God to reach us?
If so, why did His Son take upon Himself the punishment we deserved?
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
Strange it is!
God the Father laid on God the Son all the sins of the world!
To all who come to Him,
there is forgiveness of past sins
and then a new heart that is pure and clean
and no longer rebellious toward God.
Do you see the Lamb slain from before the earth was formed?
Do you see the Lamb offered on Mount Moriah,
where God’s provision is now seen?
Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
Did Jesus Christ protest His treatment by the Romans, and the Jewish leaders?
No! He knew that it was for this reason that He came to the earth.
John 6:38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
He is the Lamb of God,
who takes away the sin of the world —
not just sins, but the rebellious nature in all of us,
if we will believe Him!
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living
For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
Sin is rebellion against God.
The blameless, sinless Only Son was killed for yours and mine.
Two guilty criminals were with Him, one to the left and one to the right.
After He died, He was buried in the tomb of a rich man —
Joseph of Arimathea,
a prominent member of the Sanhedrin.
Isaiah 53:10 But the LORD was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
This was God the Father’s plan all along?
Yes, because the Only Son was blameless, spotless, and sinless,
He was the only One on this earth who could serve
as a sin offering for all of us.
And this Lamb came back to life!
He sees His offspring, those born from above,
the many sons and daughters He brings to glory (Hebrews 2:10)!
John 10:17 “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again.”
He took His life back up again!
And because He rose,
He is able to give us zoe, life as God has it!
Isaiah 53:11 As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
He is satisfied, and so are we,
when we come to intimately know Him.
And now many may be counted righteous
because He bears their sins,
WHEN THEY BELIEVE
Jesus Christ is the One and Only Son,
the Lamb of God,
who died for them and rose again.
Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Do you believe the message?
Then the powerful arm of the Lord will be revealed to you,
Jesus Christ will be revealed to you,
and by His power,
you will be forgiven.
And you will become a partake of His nature (2 Peter 1:4)
given a clean, new heart
that responds to every whisper of God!
Isaiah 52:7 (NLT) How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!
Indeed, if there had been another way,
why did God plan His Only Son’s death on a cross?
Seeing what God has done, seeing the price He paid for your sin,
O church, and O world,
will you now turn from your sin,
and receive His forgiveness and heart cleansing?
I tell you,
the message of the cross is foolishness, to those who are perishing,
but to the ones being saved,
it is the power of God and the wisdom of God!
(1 Corinthians 1:18, 24)
