“My Idea of a Savior”

Elder J. Kyle Nicholson posted this on Facebook, and I have his permission to use it and give God the glory for it —

“The truth will make you free, but it’ll probably hurt you first. Your attitude towards the truth will determine how long you are in pain and how soon you can walk in freedom.”

If Jesus were walking with you and His church on the road today, what would He say?

Text: Luke 24:13-32

— Eyes held/restrained by God, so they didn’t recognize Jesus

— Sad (sullen, gloomy)

— Jesus the prophet, crucified

— We hoped He would redeem Israel from Roman rule (their idea of a Savior)

—We don’t believe the women’s reports that the angels said He is alive, though we know His tomb is empty.

Jesus said, “O foolish (heedless) men and slow of heart (understanding) to believe all the prophets have spoken!” Then He explained the Scriptures to them. He wants to explain some things to you today, through the Scriptures.

I submit to you that your idea of a Savior determines whether you seek His hand or His face — that is, what He can do FOR you, or what He can do IN you.

If you see Him partially, as these two men saw Him, your idea of a Savior is one who saves you from financial troubles, protects you as you travel, provides you with all you need, delivers you from marriage problems, and heals your physical body. You see Him as One who can fix your life for you. You see Him partially; your view is limited, and that limits what you believe He can do.

I submit that your idea of a Savior who will things for you in the natural keeps you from seeing Him thoroughly. It isn’t that God has held your eyes, as He did with the men on the road to Emmaus, but that, like them, you seek only for what will benefit you in the natural. You want Him to fix your life.

You don’t see that His will is to fix YOU, and that your life will then be fixed beyond anything you can think or imagine! No eye has seen, no ear has heart, what God has prepared for those who love Him!

He is glad to heal and deliver, protect and provide in such a way that everyone must agree that God did it. For what purpose? So people see for themselves or hear when you tell what Jesus Christ  has done, and they repent and believe in Him.

Again, if Jesus were walking with you His church on the road today, what would He say?

He would say to His church, “O foolish (heedless) men and slow of heart

(slow to understand) to believe all the prophets have spoken!”

What Scriptures would He show you? What haven’t you heeded, what haven’t you understood, what haven’t you believed?

Leviticus 11:45/Matthew 5:28/1Peter 1:15 —  Be holy, be perfect, be holy.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 — He says, “I will give you a new heart, and put a new spirit in you . . . I will remove the heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh (one that responds to My every whisper) . . . I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to obey My commandments.”

Matthew 5, 6 and 7 — The Sermon on the Mount, impossible to obey unless you receive a new heart from Him.

Ephesians 5:15-18 — Walk wisely, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Don’t get drunk with wine! Be filled with the Spirit!

John 14:15-17, 23 — If you love Me, you will obey Me, and I will send my Spirit. My Father and I will make Our home inside of you, literally. (That means He puts the axe to the root, the sin in your heart, or God will not come and dwell there.)

Luke 24:49 — Stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high!

Acts 1:5,8 — John baptized with water . . . you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit . . . you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses everywhere, starting here.

Acts 15:9 —Your hearts are purified when you are filled with the Holy Spirit.

Is your heart burning (set on fire) by the words of Jesus (Luke 24:32)?

Luke 24:29 — The hour is late! The hour is late! It is getting toward evening. The day is now nearly over. No one can work at night (John 9:4). The Lord speaks to you now.

Ask Him TODAY to open your eyes thoroughly, like a child when it is born. Ask Him to fulfill these Scriptures in you!
