“Who Is In Charge”
[These notes are brief. There is so much more in the video of this message! The links are to the right of this post, on my blog.]
The Lord says, “I should not have to remind My church of Who is in charge.” So, why does He ask me to do that today?
Text: Psalm 46
I said, “Lord, exegetically, this is about Zion. I am careful about the handling of Your Word. Is it OK to use this for the church?” He reminded me that the Old Testament was written for the church’s instruction (1Corinthians 10:10).
Psalm 46:1-3 He reminds you that He is your refuge and strength. You are protected by the power of God. You have no strength, you can do nothing apart from Jesus Christ. He is your strength. He is abundantly available for help in tight places.
Knowing this by experience, you will not fear. It makes no difference what happens in the world. It makes no difference how tight a place seems. You know He is abundantly available. You know who is in charge, you know He protects you, and you know He is your strength.
Nebuchadnezzar was the Lord’s servant to administer correction to His people. Some disobeyed the Lord’s command to go into captivity. They ran to Egypt, and the Lord used Jeremiah to tell them that Nebuchadnezzar would come to them there. They all died in Egypt. They all died who tried to fight Babylon.
They were all spared who obeyed Him. They knew God was in charge, they knew He was abundantly available to help them in tight places. They trusted Him.
They believed Jeremiah was a prophet, and they obeyed. Witness Daniel. He was not afraid, even when thrown into a lion’s den. He went and served the despot king, and lived to the time when the 70 years of captivity were up. He was able to tell His people that they would be freed through another pagan king, Cyrus, and that this king would fund the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple. Witness Joseph. Consider these things, beloved.
The mountains (self-righteous and prideful), slip into the heart of the sea. The waters (people) roar and foam as the mountains collapse into them. The mountains quake — get ready for a great shaking! Everything will be shaken but that which cannot be shaken. What cannot be shaken? Those who know Who is in charge!
The earth is full of swelling pride. It weighs the earth down until the shaking. Then it all falls down. Do you know it?
So why does Jesus Christ ask me to remind the church of Who is in charge? Look at Verses 4-6. I asked, Lord, why is dwelling places plural? You had only one place You dwelled in Jerusalem at that time — the Temple, the Holy of Holies. But He said it is plural because it is prophetic.
A river whose streams make glad the city of God . . . that river is the infilling of the Holy Spirit (see John 7:37-39). From us flow rivers, streams, living water to a dry and dead world. We are holy dwelling places for Him, when we are filled with Him. We cannot make ourselves holy. We cannot be declared holy except by Him, and that happens when He fills us with His Spirit. We cannot be holy by actions any more than we can be saved by actions.
But when we are filled with His holiness, we become His occupying army to take back the land Satan has taken. Only then can we do it. Only then can we identify and avoid his snares and traps, and his temptations. Only then are we set free from slavery to sin. His equipment? His command to the church, from the very beginning? Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Wait! Stay!
And we are glad when we are filled! And the city of God rejoices, because the angels and the Father and the Son knows they have a vessel through whom salvation and sanctification (being filled with the Spirit) can be worked.
He is in the midst of those filled with His Spirit. His kingdom is set up in us. We will not be shaken in the great shaking, because the kingdom of God is unshakable, and He is in us, large and in charge!
We know He will help us, and He will do it for all to see, not in secret. It will be when morning dawns! Do you know it?
The reason Jesus Christ must remind His church that He is in charge is because many are not filled with the Holy Spirit. Some reject His Spirit, some are ignorant, though the Word of God is very clear on it. They likely are as I was, possessing the Word in written form, but letting it collect dust on the shelf.
In Verses 6-7, you should know that the nations will make an uproar, but they will totter at the flexing of His arm (Psalm 2). They think they can reject Him, but He has installed His anointed, His Christ, His King, and He is Ruler over all! The Lord raises His voice and the earth and all its pridefulness melts away. Peter tells us it will be destroyed by fire, in the end.
That end is not far off. I have seen and heard a video which has been confirmed by those who live in Israel. In it, very loud trumpets sound from the sky, over and over, different notes, louder and louder, amidst a ring of clouds. I believe He is calling His first chosen, Israel, to repent and believe that He sent His Messiah to them. I do not believe we have very long before Jesus comes and snatches up His church in the air.
So what does He say? Look at Verse 8. Behold My works! See how I have wrought desolation in the earth. See that it is I that makes wars to cease, it is I who breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two, it is I who burns the chariots with fire.
So cease! Cease from what? From relying on anything but Him! How can you do that? Know Him intimately, personally, intensely, Him in you, when His holiness and power and love fill Your innermost being!
He will be exalted among the nations! He will be exalted in the earth. You will not doubt it, nor wring your hands nor cry, “The sky is falling,” like Chicken Little. You will KNOW that God is in charge. And you will KNOW that your assignment is to go forth as a member of an occupying army, fully equipped! Hallelujah!
He is with you. Do you know it? Are you fussing about current events? Are you involving yourself with such things? Repent! Ask the Lord to fill you with His Spirit, and these things will mean nothing. You will KNOW, as Verse 11 says, that The Captain of the Armies of God is with you, and the God of Jacob is your stronghold, your fortress, and you are protected by the power of God, come what may, be it prejudice, persecution, or even death. It has no victory over you. It has no sting.
Beloved, my heart grieves for what I see and hear. Jesus, You know. Beloved, fix your eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2)! Be filled with His Spirit!
