“The Purpose of Access, Part 1”
[These notes are brief. There is so much more in the video of this message! The links are to the right of this post, on my blog.]
Texts: Ephesians 2:6 & 10, Isaiah 60:1-3, and others as noted.
What is the purpose of believers’ access to the very throne room of God?
I have been asking the Lord to show me greater depths of meaning of this passage:
Ephesians 2:6 and [God] raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Why have we been spiritually seated with Christ Jesus, who sits at the right hand of God? The definition of “seated” will give us a hint —
First, “has seated” means He has prepared a place for us (John 14:3) that where He is, we may be also. Not only when we die and go to heaven, but here and now! His promise in John 14 is connected to Ephesians 2:6! It gives it a here-and-now meaning I never saw before!
And “seated” means to recline on a bed or couch, at table. People in biblical times did not sit in a chair at a table. They reclined on couches or rugs, leaning on one elbow and eating with the free hand. Immediately, John reclining next to Jesus comes to mind. “Seated” is a place of intimacy, of closeness, of being able to hear His very heartbeat as you lean back onto His chest to ask Him a question.
So why does He give this access to us? What are our misconceptions about this access? And what prevents this access?
We see the answer to the purpose of our intimate access in Ephesians 2:10 —
Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
These are not the good works that any unbeliever can do. These are “God works,” which God has prepared in advance, so we will do them! Because we have access, we are able to see what He is doing and do it, and hear what He is saying and say it. Then He is able to show us what He wants us to do next.
What are our misconceptions about this access? That when we are in a jam and need help, when we have an emergency, when we have a need, we cry out to God and He answers. He will sometimes do that for those who do not yet know the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit, because He is merciful. But that is not “access to the throne room of God.” That is His mercy.
But do you not know that your Father in heaven already knows what you need, before you ask? And do you not know that Jesus’ command is to seek first the kingdom of God (set up in your heart) and His righteousness (filling your heart) and all these things will be added unto you?
The purpose of access is to do works that only God can do. Your needs will be met if the kingdom of God and His righteousness is within you.
What blocks us from seeing these things?
— Differing theologies that say we must always be in a wretched state (see Romans 7:24) but thank God for the blood of Jesus Christ.
— A desire to give warm, fuzzy messages to people who “have had a hard week” and need a happy message.
— Sin, and our love for it. Sin separates us from God. We do not have the access to Him, and we cannot fulfill our purpose. And ultimately, the wages of sin is death.
— Mental assent. We have agreed that the Bible is true. We have agreed that Jesus is who He says He is. But we have not seen His glory. We must catch a glimpse from the Holy Spirit, who kindly opened my eyes to see it when I was seeking to know the Lord like Tommy Tenney’s “The God Chasers” described, when I was seeking Him for healing.
Once you catch that glimpse, what is the Father’s command? Heed Jesus Christ (Matthew 17:5). Take action on His words. Do not simply hear them with your ears. Stay! Wait! Be baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire!
What are these “God works,” we will do, and what is their purpose?
Isaiah 60:1-3 says our Light has come, and Jesus prayed in John 17:22 that it would be in the disciples and all believers throughout the ages. It had not happened yet, but He prayed as though it was done. It could not happen until He died to reconcile us to God, rose to give us eternal life, ascended and was glorified and poured out His Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
I tell you, your Light will come and you will be filled with the glory of God, when you experience your own personal Pentecost and are baptized in the Holy Spirit, your heart purified (Acts 15:9), and no longer a slave to sin (John 8:31-36)!
Then nations (unbelievers) will come to your light, and kings to the brightness (radiance) of your rising (shining). The first purpose of access is TO SHINE!
Your shining will draw people to Jesus Christ, even those in high places.
And the church could not be the church until that was done — it was an order, a command. Stay in the city (Luke 24:49), wait for the promise of the Father (Acts 1:4). Am I repeating myself? YES!
You see, you cannot have access to the very throne room of God if there is sin in you — that is, willful disobedience toward God. But Jesus says He has come to free us, indeed, from slavery to sin (John 8:31-36).
Isaiah 61:1-2 gives you a broader picture of the “God works” you will do when you are seated with Him in heaven, with Christ Jesus.
The Spirit of the Lord is IN me (John 14:17)! I am seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus so I can bring His Good News to the humble and contrite. I am seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus so I can bind up (as with a bandage that HEALS) those with shattered hearts, regardless of the reason for the shattering.
I am seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus so I can proclaim liberty to captives. I am seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus so I can proclaim opening to those who are bound, as one who was born blind but now sees! I am seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus so I can proclaim that this is the favorable year of the Lord, the year when all slaves were set free in Israel, the Year of Jubilee! Freedom to slaves of what? Sin!
I am seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus so I can announce that there will be a Judgment Day. I cannot leave that piece out of the message. I am seated with Christ, I hear what the Father and Son say, and I do not leave out a word.
If I don’t proclaim the coming judgment, then who needs to be saved? What are we saved from? God’s wrath! But that is not pleasant to hear, so many will not proclaim it. Thus, they reveal that they are NOT seated with Christ Jesus in the heavenly places.
Jesus Christ is coming back for His church glorious (Ephesians 5:27), one filled with His kabod, the very weighty presence of God. Look at Psalm 45:13! The King’s daughter is all glorious (kabuddah, feminine for kabod) within!
Do not delay, but come to your merciful Father right now, and ask Him to forgive you for your sin, for your unbelief, for your rejection of this truth, for your misconception of it! Ask Jesus Christ to fill you with His Holy Spirit, and you will find that you are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus so you can SHINE and do GOD WORKS in these last days, just according to His command! Amen.
