“What Can I Give Him?”
[These notes are brief. There is so much more in the video of this message! The links are to the right of this post, on my blog.]
What can I give Him, poor as I am? Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of God (Matthew 5:3)!
Your gift to Him is your humbleness before Him. And when you give it to Him, He will exult, He will sing for joy, and He will spin around! He will renew you in His love!
Texts: Zephaniah 3, Philippians 2:5
Zephaniah — A prophecy of Israel’s restoration, after they have been exiled in Babylon, exiled from God’s presence, because of their sin.
BUT ALSO — A prophecy of a Christian’s restoration, after they have been exiled from God’s presence because of their sin.
3:8a Wait (for His purpose to be fulfilled in YOU)
Stay (Luke 24:49)! Wait (Acts 1:4)!
Humble ones stay and wait.
1 Peter 5:6 — Humble yourself before Him and He will exalt you
Matthew 23:12 — The humble will be exalted and exalted will be humbled
Psalm 40:7 — I have come to do Your will . . .
Philippians 2:5 — Mind this which was also in Christ Jesus (a command)
How shall you become humble, so He exults, sings for joy, and spins around?
— Cry out, “I am a slave to sin and lack Your nature!”
— Ask Him to purify your lips/heart
What He gives you because you give Him the gift of your humbleness:
3:9 Purified lips (hearts — see Matthew 12:34, out of the overflow . . .)
3:10 You used to be an exile — now you are a worshiper! Now purified, you bring offerings in righteousness (Malachi 3:3).
3:11 No more shame, no more pride/haughtiness toward God, by you, because you no longer pridefully say, “I can do it, I can do what I want, I don’t need my heart changed.”
3:12 Humble, lowly, taking refuge in His name
3:13 You will:
— Do no wrong
— Speak no lies
— No deceit will be found in you
3:17 The LORD God, the warrior, saves (delivers) to the uttermost (Hebrews 7:25):
— From sin
— From sinning
— Exults over you with joy!
— Renews you in His love! He will fill you with His actual love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and you will be under God’s control, by the Holy Spirit.
— Rejoices and sings and spins around! He dances for joy!
3:20 Why? Because your shame is turned into renown and praise —
— Nations come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising
— You proclaim the gospel and coming judgment
— You set the captives free
— You possess His wisdom and truth
You have fulfilled His purpose because you have waited!
