“The Only Way, Truth, and Life”

Text: John 14:1-6

As I noted last time, the Lord has asked me to emphasize specific essential truths in John Chapters 13-17. Since He calls them essential, all believers must also call them essential.

Again, I pray that you will catch a glimpse of Him through today’s message, and will come to perfectly see and understand the second essential, absolutely necessary truth that Jesus Christ wants me to show you.

In John 13:33-36, the essential truth that Christ gave the Eleven, and gives to you, was that in order for them to obey His new commandment, they must love with His divine love. Only then will all men know without a doubt that they are His, and that He is who He says He is.

Today, the essential truth that the Lord gave the Eleven, and gives to you,  is that there is only one Way to reach God — Him, for He is the only means of entrance into heaven! And there is only one truth — Jesus Christ, who is the Evidence that the Word of God is absolute truth, for if a Savior was not essential for humans, God the Father would not have sent Him. And there is only one life — eternal life, of which the eternally existent Jesus Christ is the Possessor and Source!

Verse 1 —

“Do not let your heart be troubled (agitated, turbulent); believe in God, believe also in Me.”

There is no “let” in the original Greek, so this is a command. From Greek-to-English, Jesus Christ says, “Not your heart be troubled; have faith in and trust in God, have faith in and trust in Me.” He would not have needed to give this command, if the Eleven already had faith in and trusted in God and in Him.

He knew their hearts were agitated and turbulent. If they had faith and trust in God and Him, their hearts would have been at peace. So He commanded them to have faith in and trust in God and Him. He knows your heart, too, beloved! Believe in God, and believe also in Him!

Why did they not have faith and trust in God and Him? As I said last time, they did not fully understand who Jesus is. They had concluded that He was an earthly Savior who would save them from Roman rule, reestablish the kingdom of Israel, and sit as King of Israel on the throne in Jerusalem. Then their lives would be better. But if He was going away, none of that would happen!

Verse 2 —

“In My Father’s house are many dwelling places (mansions); if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place (a home) for you.”

At this point in John’s gospel, He had told them many times that God is His Father, and that His Father sent Him to the earth. As Jews, they knew that God was in heaven. Therefore, when He told them that He is going to His Father’s house, He was declaring that He is God the Son, and was returning to heaven, from whence He had been sent by His Father.

But again, they were not spiritual, so they did not understand Jesus’ words when He said He was sent by His Father. They did not understand that when He said, “In My Father’s house,” He again declared that God was His Father, and since His Father was in heaven and He was going back to His Father, then He was going to heaven.

Jesus told them there are many mansions in heaven, and that He was going to prepare a place for them. His words were the truth, or He would not have spoken them. Jesus always speaks the truth, because He is the only Truth. He is God the Son, and God is not a man, that He should lie —

1Samuel 15:29 Samuel said, “Also the Glory of Israel (that is, the LORD) will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind.”

By His words, He declared that He would open heaven to them. No one had been there but Him, until now—

John 3:13 “No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man”.

His words are worthy of great rejoicing, for those who love and obey Him! But I must warn those of you who are little children, infants in Christ who are not yet spiritual (1Corinthians 3:1).

In Revelation 3:5, He speaks to those in the church at Sardis who are sinning, and warns them to repent, or their names would be erased from the book of life. If your sin nature has not been crucified, you will continue to sin against the Lord. That is why the condition of every Christian must be that their sin nature has been crucified, as Paul exhorts the believers at Galatia —

Galatians 5:24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh (that is, the sin nature) with its passions and desires.

Verse 3 —

“If I go and prepare a place (home) for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.”

Because He goes to prepare a place for them in heaven, He will certainly come again and receive them to Himself (bring them near to Himself). When He brings them near to Himself when it is time for their bodies to die, they will suddenly find that they are in the home He has prepared for them, in heaven!

That should be good news to the Eleven and for you, for He says they and you will someday be in heaven, with Him! And the news He will speak later in John 14 will be even more cause for rejoicing, for He will not only bring Himself near to you, but fill you with Himself, the Father, and the Spirit when you obey His command to do it (John 14:23, Acts 1:4-5)!

But remember that when He spoke these words to the Eleven, they did not yet understand who Jesus really is. So they did not understand His words, as Thomas will show us in Verse 5.

Again, rejoice greatly, if you love and obey Him! But repent, if you are yet a little child, an infant in Christ and are therefore still sinning against Him!

Verse 4 —

“And you know (have seen and perfectly understand) the way where I am going.”

In John 14-17, the Lord prophesied about what His disciples will be but were not yet. That is the case, in this verse. They did not yet know — they had not yet seen and perfectly understood  — that He was returning to heaven, from whence He was sent by His Father. But because He prophesies, “You know,” a time will come when they see and perfectly understand that He is the Way to heaven, for they will see and perfectly understand that He has opened heaven to those who love and obey Him!

When will they suddenly see and perfectly understand how to get where He is going? When they are filled with the Holy Spirit! God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit will be in them, fully and permanently!

Then, the Way will be in them, heaven will be within them! So, there will be no doubt in their minds and hearts that they will be with Him, in heaven. But that is not all they will know, when they are filled with Him! They will also fully and perfectly understand the essential truth He is about to tell them, in Verse 6.

Verse 5 —

Thomas  said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”

Again, remember that Thomas and the rest of the Eleven were yet little children, infants (John 13:33). So Thomas asked the Lord how they could they possibly know the way if they do not know where He is going. None of them understood that He was sent from heaven by His Father, and was returning to heaven.

But after they were filled, the Spirit put all of Jesus Christ’s words into their minds (John 14:26). Then they said, “Ah! Now I see and perfectly understand what the Lord was saying!”

Verse 6 —

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but (except, only) through Me.”

As I said at the beginning of this message, this is the second essential truth that the Lord has asked me to show you. It is a truth that was absolutely necessary for them to see and perfectly understand, and it is the same for you today, beloved!

The Eleven’s questions were: Where are You going? How can we know the Way? He answered with the essential truth that He is the only Way, Truth, and Life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him. But what do His words mean?

He is the Way. He is the only means to go to heaven! No one comes to the Father but through Him. It is through believing into Him and obeying Him that heaven is opened to you. He is the only Way for you to be made ready for heaven!

— He is the Truth. He is the revealed truth of God. By sending God the Son to the earth to die on a cross, God the Father demonstrated the truth that all humans need a Savior. If that were not true, He would not have needed to send His Son. These are absolute truths — they are fixed, they never vary, and they cannot be altered. And He is the embodiment of truth, for He is God the Son, and God does not lie.

— He is the Life. He is the Possessor and Source of zoe, eternal life! He is the Possessor of it because He is the eternally existent God the Son (John 1:1-2). And He is the Source of it, for eternal life is given to you when you believe into Him (John 3:16).

Can the eternal life He has given you be lost, if you continue to sin against Him? Yes, just as I have already spoken from the Word of God.

The Lord has asked me to briefly share an encounter I had with some Christians whom I knew well. It was shortly after I had been filled with the Spirit. At a Bible study, a woman who had taught the Bible for many years said this, regarding someone who had died without knowing the Lord — “They will be saved in some way.”

I objected, saying that there is only one Way, and He is Jesus Christ. If the words Jesus Christ spoke were not the truth, and everyone will be “saved in some way,” then there was no need for the Father to send His Son! She then went to one of the lay leaders, offended because I had objected to her words.

The lay leader and his wife invited Jeff and me to dinner at their home. After dinner, they spent a couple of hours trying to convince us that Jesus Christ did not mean what He said, in John 14:6. They said the word “but” really did not mean “except, only, if not.” They also argued that the phrase “comes to the Father” can depend on what you think the word “comes” means. By their words, they revealed that they knew about the Lord, but did not know Him, for if they had known Him, they never would not have said what they said and done what they did.

Beloved, the Greek-to-English is precise — “No one comes (comes, goes) to the Father except (if not, but, only) through Me.” As I said, it cannot be otherwise, for there would have been no need for the Father to send His Son to die on a cross!

Nevertheless, there are many in the church who believe as they believe. Beloved, beware of such ones! Jesus means what He says and says what He means!

The Lord’s command to you, little children, is this —  repent and ask Him to crucify your sin nature and fill you with His Spirit, as He commands. Then you will know the only Way, Jesus Christ! Then you will see and perfectly understand the essential, absolutely necessary truth He has asked me to show you today, for the only Way, the only Truth, and the only Life will fully and permanently indwell you!

Lord Jesus, may Your little children not hear, but heed, so they understand the essential truth that You are the only Way, the Truth, and the Life! Let it be so, I pray! Amen!
