“Love With My Divine Love”

Text: John 15:12-17

The next truth that is essential, absolutely necessary for you to know is that Jesus Christ commands you to love with His divine love — not human love. He commands you to love with the same love the Father has for the Son.

Beloved, believers cannot love with His divine love until they carry out His commandments to stay and wait (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4-5). Then they are filled with His Holy Spirit, and with His divine love, even to overflowing (Romans 5:5)!

He already gave this same command twice in John 13:34. Why does He again speak it twice, in today’s passage? Because it is an essential truth, and a commandment that you will suddenly and quickly be able to obey, when you are filled with His Spirit. Remember that throughout the Bible, if God says it twice, it will happen suddenly and quickly!

As He does throughout John13-17, He speaks of what the Eleven are not yet, but will be when they carry out His commandments to stay and wait. It is the same for you, beloved, so I will speak directly to you.
Verse 12 —

“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.”

He has loved you with His divine love, just as He has loved the Eleven with His divine love. Now He gives you a commandment that you cannot carry out until you carry out His commandments to stay and wait. He says you must love your brothers and sisters in Christ with the same divine love with which He has loved you!

But beloved, you were born with human love, not divine love. Therefore, something must happen in you, in order for you to love with His divine love, instead of human love. You must carry out His commandments to stay and wait to be filled with His Holy Spirit, for then you will be filled with His divine love!

Beloved, I testify that when I stayed and waited, He made me able to carry out all of His commandments, including this one! It will be the same for you, when you do as I did!

Verse 13 —

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”

There is no greater expression of His divine love than this — He laid down His

life for you, and for whosoever will believe into Him. Now, He asks you to do the same for your friends as what He did for you.

And there is no greater evidence that you have been filled with His divine love than this — you lay down your life for the sake of your friends.

But what is it to lay down your life? And who are your friends?

What is it to lay down your life?

Jesus tells you —

Matthew 16:24 “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must lay down (literally, disconnect from) his life and take up his cross and follow Me (be in union with Me).”

So you must do these things, in the order He has spoken them

#1 Lay down your life — Disconnect from your present life and utterly reject it. Jesus cannot mean natural death, for He tells you what you must do next.

#2 Take up your cross — Ask Him to crucify your sin nature (Galatians 5:24) and fill you with the Holy Spirit.

Follow Him — Be in union with Him, one with Him, united in purpose with Him and operating with Him, because you have been filled with His Holy Spirit.

You were saved from the wrath of God and reconciled to Him because Jesus Christ laid down His life on a cross. He did it for your sake. On the third day, He rose, ascended, was glorified, and poured out the Holy Spirit so believers who stay and wait are filled with the Holy Spirit and bear all of His divine fruit abundantly and continually (John 15:5). What great things He has done for your sake!

And when you lay down your life and ask the Lord to crucify your sin nature and fill you with the Holy Spirit, your brothers and sisters in Christ will be abundantly blessed by you, because you will love them with His love and bear all of His divine fruit. You will lay down your life for their sake, and His!

But if you refuse to do what He says you must do, Jesus warns you —

Matthew 16:25 “For whoever wishes to preserve his life will lose it (utterly destroy it) . . .”

If you want to preserve your present life and your sin nature, you disobey Him, revealing that you do not love Him. Because you do not love Him, you will utterly destroy your life. You will perish.

Who are your friends?

Verse 14 —

“You are My friends if you do what I command you.”

The condition for being His friend is obedience to His commandments to stay and wait. If you obey, you are His friend. As He has said, if you obey Him, you reveal that you love Him (John 14:15, 21). You do what He commands because you love Him, and therefore you are His friend.

Therefore, it is also true that if you do not carry out His commandments, you are not His friend. By your disobedience, you reveal that you do not love Him (John 14:24).

Verse 15 —

“No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know (is not aware of, does not see) what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you (gnoridzo, given you complete knowledge by intimate experience).”

Again, Jesus speaks of what you are not yet, but what you will be when you carry out His commandments to stay and wait. Then you will no longer be His slave (servant). He will call you His friend!

If you are a saved follower of Jesus, like the Eleven, you are His slave. He does not yet call you His friend. Therefore, you are not aware of and do not see what your Master is doing.

But He will call you His friend if you carry out His commandments to stay and wait to be filled with His Holy Spirit. Then you will be aware of and see what He is doing, for you will completely know all things that He has heard from the Father.  He will make all that He knows be known by you. How?

Remember that when you are filled, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit fully and permanently indwell you (John 14:23). Then, you intimately know and experience the Lord, literally within you. And the Holy Spirit teaches you all things that Jesus Christ knows, and therefore, all things that the Father knows, for the Son knows all that the Father knows (John 14:26, 16:13-15).

I testify that Jesus Christ did these things in me, when I asked Him to crucify my sin nature and fill me with His Holy Spirit! It will be the same for you, if you will carry out His commandments to stay and wait!

Verse 16 —

“You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give (literally, He gives) to you.”

Jesus Christ says you did not choose Him. You did not “make a decision” for Him. He chose you!

What was His purpose in choosing you? To appoint you to go forth and bear His divine fruit, and to have His fruit to permanently and fully indwell you.

But as I taught last week, you cannot bear His divine fruit, nor can His divine fruit permanently indwell you, until your sin nature has been crucified and you have been permanently and completely filled with Him and the Father and the Spirit.

Then, the Father will do as Jesus promises in the second half of this verse — Whatever you ask the Father, He gives you. He does so because you ask in His name, having His divine nature, so you are one with Him, united in purpose and working together with Him. Therefore, you only want what He wants.

Verse 17 —

“This I command you, that you love one another.”

He opened and now closes this passage with this commandment — love one another with His divine love.

He repeats it to emphasize that it is essential and absolutely necessary for you to know it and do it. And He repeats it because you will suddenly and quickly be able to do it, when your sin nature is crucified and you are filled with the Holy Spirit!

Jesus Christ gives you a commandment to love your brothers and sisters with His divine love. He has ordained and appointed you to go and bear His divine fruit, and that His divine fruit permanently and fully indwell you.

Beloved, He has given you a commandment to love with His divine love two times in John 13:34, and two times in John 15. It is a commandment you cannot carry out unless you carry out His commandments to stay and wait.

So now He asks you a question, beloved. Will you carry out His commandments to stay and wait? If you do, you will love your brothers and sisters in Christ with His divine love!

Or will you refuse to carry out His commandments to stay and wait and thereby be unable to obey His command to love them with His love? Again, if you disobey Him, you reveal that you do not love Him.

Beloved, in today’s church, I see many infants in Christ (see 1Corinthians 3:1) who do not love each other with His divine love. Instead, they bear the fruit of their sin nature (Galatians 5:19-21). The fruit they bear reveals that they do not love Him, for they have disobeyed His commandments to stay and wait.

Paul warns such ones of the consequences of their disobedience —

Galatians 5:21 . . . (the fruit of the sin nature) of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Are you like the infants at Corinth, beloved? Do you bear the fruit of your sin nature? Then you are unable to love with His divine love, as He commands you. And you reveal that you do not love Jesus Christ, for you have not carried out His commandments to stay and wait so you love with His love.

If you are like them, then repent! Utterly reject and disconnect from your present life, and ask Jesus Christ to crucify your sin nature and fill you with the Holy Spirit. Then you will love Him and will love your brothers and sisters in Christ with His divine love, and you will be His friend, abundantly and continually bearing His divine fruit!

Lord Jesus, through these truths, may many infants in Christ see their spiritual condition, repent, and carry out Your commandments to stay and wait. Let it be so, I pray! Amen!
